PLACES FOR FISHING IN MONGOLIA

SELENGE RIVER IN MONGOLIA

Largest river of Mongolia, originated 50 km south of Moron (Khuvsgul aimag), on the border with the Arkhangai aimag, on the area where the Ider, Bugsei, Chuluut rivers, Delger Moron converge. The Selenge is formed by the confluence of the Ider river, which rises on the northern slope of the Khangai Mountain Range, and the Delger river.

The Selenge river drains into Lake Baikal in Siberia. The Selenge river is 992 kilometers long, of which 593 kilometers flows through Mongolian territory. Large rivers - the Orkhon, Yeroo and Tamir - drain into the Selenge. The annual flow of the Selenge river is a remarkable 9.3 cubic kilometers and it accapts 30.6% of the flow of all rivers in Mongolia.

It appears that the Selenge river is navigable from Sukhbaatar city all the way to Lake Baikal and thence to the Arctic Ocean. This unknown challenge for intrepid explores merits study as a potential tourism route.

Baikal Sturgeon, Taimen, Lenok, Sig, Umber, Pike, Siberian Roach, Ide, Bull Ide, Golden Carp, Mirror Carp, Amur Catfish, Burbot and River Perch are the main fish in the Selenge river. The Selenge river basin is important for arable farming.

There are Orkhon, Tuul, Kharaa, Yeruu, Iven, Burgaltai, Suren, Mankhai, Sharyn and many other small and big rivers emptying into the Selenge river. Originated in Khuvsgul aimag, it flows through Selenge aimag and fall into lake Baikal (Russia).

The Selenge river near the Russian - Mongolian border - one of the top places to fish in Mongolia.

September and October - the best time for fishing in Selenge river.
