KHUVSGUL AIMAG.
Mörön
Mörön is the capital and the administrative centre of the province of
Khovsgol. Its located 690 kilometres (429 miles) from Ulan Bator. Since 2014, a
tarred road connects the two cities in 10 to 12 hours approximately. Moron has
an airport and daily flights from and to Ulan Bator. The flight is 1.15 hour
long.
Moron city is at a height of 1280 metres (0,80 mile) in the valley of the
Delgermörön River that has its source in Mount Ulaan Taiga, in the extreme
Northwest of the province. This valley has been protected as a natural reserve
since 2003. Mörön has a museum that proposes a good idea of the local fauna and
flora. Some traditional, Buddhist and shamanist costumes are also exposed.
Moron city has also a hospital, a theatre, a post office, many schools and
children gardens, and one of the largest outdoor markets of the country.
Moron (which means river) has few sights and most travelers just drive through en route to
Khatgal at the southern end of
Khovsgol Nuur.
- Moron Museum. Given the variety of wildlife in the aimag, stuffed animals are, not surprisingly, the main feature of the museum. There's a large tusk from a woolly
mammoth, but you won't see one of those in the flesh - they haven't inhabited this region for over 40,000 years. Photographic exhibits of the Tsaatan people
are also intriguing.
- Danzandarjaa Khiid (Monastery). The history of this khiid (monastery) is unclear, but the original monastery (Morongiin Khuree)
was built around 1890 and was home to 2000 monks. It was rebuilt and reopened in June 1990, and now has 30 monks of all ages. It's a charming
place, designed in the shape of a concrete ger, and contains a great collection of scroll paintings (thangka).
