excursion to the statue of Genghis Khan located in the area of Tsongjin Boldog.
This equestrian statue is the largest monument to Genghis Khan in Mongolia and
the largest equestrian statue in the world. It is situated 54 km southeast of
the center of Ulaanbaatar, in the administratively part of Nalaih, a district of
Ulaanbaatar.
The statue, designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J.
Enkhjargala, was officially opened on September 26, 2008. It stands at a height
of 40 m, excluding the ten-meter pedestal, and is made of stainless steel
weighing 250 tons. The statue is symbolically directed towards the east, the
birthplace of Genghis Khan, and is surrounded by 36 columns representing the
khans of the Mongol Empire. The two-storey pedestal houses various facilities
such as an art gallery, a museum of the Xiongnu era, a billiard room,
restaurants, a souvenir shop, and a conference room. Visitors can also enjoy the
observation deck located on the horse's head.
