It's the oldest town of the region, founded in 1598 according the order of the tzar Fyodor Ioannovich. 300 km from Yekaterinburg. The town had two main meanings for the state for two centuries.
 

Verkhoturye is one of the most prominent religious centers in Russia and dates back 400 years, making it the oldest city in the region. It is located 300 km from Ekaterinburg, and offers you the chance to see some of the most famous churches in Russia. This tour is a must for those who are interested in the religious history of Russia.
 

You’ll see the churches; each designed in a different style, within the town fortress, as well as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (1703). You’ll visit the following functioning monasteries: Nikolayevsky monastery, where the relic of the Saint Symeon of Verhoturye is interred, and Pokrovsky Monestary (1744-53). You’ll see the second largest cathedral in Russia, the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross, and the House for honored guests built to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov. You’ll also be struck by the mesmerizing collection of the Orthodox museum near the Nikolayevsky Monastery. Women are strongly recommended to wear skirts and headscarves (or hats) when visiting the monasteries.
