WELCOME TO BURYATIA

The Republic of Buryatia is a subject of the Russian
Federation and is included in Sibirski Federal okrug. The administrative,
economic and cultural centre of the Republic is the city of
Ulan-Ude.
The distance from Ulan-Ude to Moscow by railroad is 5519 km and to the Pacific
ocean is 3500 km. The total area of the Republic of Buryatia is 351,3 thousand
sq.km. Buryatia is located in the southern part of East Siberia to the
south-east of Baikal lake. It boarders on Mongolia in the south, on the Republic
of Tuva in the south-west, on the Irkutsk oblast in the north-west and on the
Chita oblast in the east.
There are 23 municipal formation, 6 towns, 29 urban villages and 615
settlements on the territory of Buryatia. By 01.01.2002 the number of population
was 1019,4 thousand, the average density is 3,0 men per 1 sq.km. The urban
population is about 60% of the total number of the population of the Republic
and rural population is about 40 %, about two thirds of the whole population of
Buryatia live in its capital. The native people of the republic are Buryats,
Evenks and Soyots. The national structure of Buryatia according to the Census of
1989 was the following : Russians- 70%, Buryats- 24%, Ukrainians- 2,2%, other
nationalities- 3,8 %.
The climate of Buryatia is sharp- continental with cold winter and hot
summers. Winters are cold with dry frosts and little snow. Springs are windy
with late frosts and almost without rainfalls. Summers are short with hot days
and cool nights,with heavy rains in July and August . Autumn comes slowly
without sudden changes of weather, sometimes autumns are long and warm. The
average summer temperature is 18C above zero, in winter it is 22C below zero and
annual average temperature is 1,6C below zero. Annual rainfalls and snowfalls
achieve 244 mm.
The major part (about 60% of coastline) of Baikal Lake , the deepest
freshwater lake in the world is in the territory of Buryatia. The length of
Baikal is 636 km., and the width is from 25 to 79 km. The total length of Baikal
coastline is 2100 km., and the area of its aquatorium is 31,5 thousand sq.m. The
maximum depth is 1637 m., the average one is 730 m. Baikal is a natural
reservoir of the fifth part of the world fresh water supply of the highest
quality. There are 2500 different species of animals and fish, 250 of which are
endemic.
The Republic of Buryatia possesses a promising recreation potential and its
effective usage can satisfy the requirements in spa treatment, tourism and rest
of the people of the republic itself and other regions of Russia, the CIS, as
well as the demands of foreign tourists from Asia, Europe and America. This fact
is sufficient for creating a highly profitable tourist complex in Buryatia as
one of perspective sectors of the republic's economy development. The unique
eco-system of Lake Baikal and the culture-national landscape of its region
present great perspectives for the development of the tourist branch of economy.
There are 50 enterprises and organizations in the Republic of Buryatia which
implement the tourist activity, 17 of them are involved in nternational tourism,
6 are occupied with non- commercial tourism. An unorganized form of tourism with
participation of tourists from Russia's regions is considerably developed in
Buryatia. Priybaykalski, Barguzinski, Kurumkanski, Kabanski, Tunkinski and
Okinski districts are the most perspective ones for tourism.
The Republic of Buryatia has unique possibilities for organizaing a network of
sanatoriums and health resorts. One of the favorable factors for such projects
is the rich nature of Baikal and a great number of nature curative springs which
can treat gastic and gut diseases, heart diseases, rheumatism, etc.
