Vladivostok Aquarium (Oceanarium)
The oceanarium is one of sights of Vladivostok and settles down in city centre on
street. Batarejnoj, 4. It is part of the oldest rybohozjajstvennoj the
organization on the Far East - Pacific research rybohozjajstvennogo the center (TINRO-CENTER).
The oceanarium is the sea museum including dry and alive expositions which are devoted to the nature of Pacific ocean. It has two exposition halls which general area makes more than 1500 sq.m.
In a museum exposition the central place borrows diarama a rookery of
pussy-cats and the bird's market. Its other part is made by biogroups with
penguins, albatross, latimeriej and kalanom in which sea animals are shown in
natural conditions. In show-windows collections of sea bowls, corals, sponges,
fishes and other sea animals are submitted. It is possible to attribute to
unique exhibits: models stellerovoj cows and latimerii, a germ kalana an albino,
a fish and a bird of tropics, penguins and many other things. The museum
collection includes more than 1 thousand exhibits. All of them are made or
restored in taksidermicheskoj by workshop of the Oceanarium.
In the big round hall in 13-oe aquariums inhabitants of fresh-water
reservoirs of the Far East, Peter the Great bay, the tropical seas are placed.
In the central hall in 4 holodnovodnyh aquariums inhabitants Japanese and the
seas Ohotskogo are placed. The part of an exposition is devoted to decorative
aquarian fishes who are placed in independent aquariums. In total in the
Oceanarium contains about 120 kinds (more than 2 thousand copy).
The process equipment of the Oceanarium includes 29 permanently established
aquariums with volume of water from 4000 up to 30000 cube. M which are grouped
in 15 independent systems with the closed cycle of water supply. More than 40
aquariums are placed in an exposition and laboratories of the Oceanarium.
Annually the Oceanarium is visited with 160-180 thousand inhabitants and
visitors of city which get acquainted with variety of fauna of the Far East seas.
The oceanarium is modern laboratory for carrying out of scientific researches
under programs of the TINRO-CENTER. It contains rare and disappearing kinds
gidrobiontov, thematic exhibitions are arranged, employment with students and
schoolboys are carried out.
The second interesting construction is the Delphinarium which also
belongs to the TINRO-CENTER and settles down near to the Oceanarium.
The delphinarium has been constructed in 1987 as experimental base of
institute. In 1988 the demonstration program and the Delphinarium has been
prepared is open for visitors. It was open on 1 - 2 years in hope for fast
construction of a capital construction.
On the design the Delphinarium represents floating pontoon established at a
pier on quay Batarejnoj. Inside a pontoon three are suspended sadka which
contain animals. For 10 years of operation of the Delphinarium in it lived from
two eight white whales (Delphina-pterus leucas) and from two eight northern sea
pussy-cats (Callorhinus ursinus linnaeus). The delphinarium, despite of
existence in city of permanent or time exhibitions and other entertainment
actions, uses constant attention of inhabitants and visitors of city. Annually
it visits 100 - 120 thousand person. Now in Delphinariums three white whales and two pussy-cats live.
