NOVOSIBIRSK. CULTURE AND ART
Novosibirsk is one of the culture centers of Russia. Its face is multifarious and
multicolored. All kinds of art and culture are present here: architecture and
painting, music and theatre, classic art and folk.
The symbol of Novosibirsk is Opera and Ballet House - one of the most
beautiful buildings in Novosibirsk. It is called "Big Theatre of
Siberia". Not only the architecture of Opera and Ballet House is original
but its troupe also. Siberian school of ballet and opera has got its high
reputation all over the world. There are 8 professional theatres in Novosibirsk,
with multifarious repertoire and their own spectators admirers.
Every year talented young people, graduated from Novosibirsk State
Conservatoire by the name of Glinka, Ballet School and Theatre School, Music
College enter the troupes of theatres of Novosibirsk and Russia. The city is
well-known with its jazz groups and bands.
Academic Orchestra of Symphony Music of Novosibirsk State Philharmony, famous
all over the world is a pride of our city. Professor A.M. Katz, the leader and
conductor of the Orchestra, was awarded with a prize "The Man of the
Year" in 1994 for outstanding contribution into the development of music
culture and strengthening of prestige of Novosibirsk abroad granted by the City
Head . In 1995 professor A. Katz was awarded with the State Prize of Russia.
Novosibirsk Violin School is worth to be praising. Its graduates such as
A.Barakchovsky, V. Repin, I. Konovalov have become famous all over the world.
Young musicians, artists, dancers, the students who have been granted
scholarships from the Fund of "Young Talents of Siberia" are very
popular and loved among admirers of art in our city. They are pride and future
of Novosibirsk and its hopes for 21 century.
Novosibirsk is famous also for its Art Gallery, the exposition of which
counts more than 6 thousand pieces of art of Russian and foreign artists. A real
masterpiece of it is a collection of N. Rerich pictures, which was presented by
the son of the artist.
- The Novosibirsk Opera House is an architectural marvel in itself.
It is the largest in Russia (it's space is 65000 square meters more than
that of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow!) and among the largest in the world!
Its first theatrical season was opened on May, 12th - during the days when
all the country celebrated victory in the Second World War. During the war,
the exhibits from world-famous museums of Moscow (Tretyakovskaya Gallery),
Leningrad (Hermitage), Novgorod, Sevastopol and other Soviet cities were
kept and saved here. At present, the Theater houses two permanent ballet and
opera companies, well-known throughout the world.

- Chamber Chorus of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society. Novosibirsk
State Philharmony was founded on the 1st of January 1937. The activities are
as follows: the development of academic traditional forms of performing art,
propaganda of Russian and foreign music culture and folk art.
Novosibirsk Phylharmony is the leader of music life in our city and the one
in Russia which unites about 13 music troupes.
