“The summer entertainment country-house of count Peter Borisovitch Sheremetiev” was intended for parties, celebrations and entertainments. For more than half a century beginning with 1739 and ending with 1792 count P. B. Sheremetev, son of Peter the Great’s associate Field-Mars hal B. P. Sheremetev, has built and decorated the manor. His summer residence was not inferior to the tsar’s palace in refinement and magnificence. The summer palace and three beautiful parks: a regular French park, a landscape English and a ponded park were located on three hundred hectares. The parks were adorned with a system of ponds and canals, sculptures, a “Hermitage” gallery, “ A Grotto”, “An Italian House”, “A Dutch House”, “A Green-house” and other big and small specimens of park architecture. K. I. Blank, A. F. Mironov, G. E. Dikushin, F. S. Argunov and other prominent architects took part in the creation of that magnificent complex. Most of the architects were count Sheremetiev’s serfs. Today “the summer entertainment country-house” is very popular among directors, shooting films, connected with Catherine or Elisabeth’s epochs. Nowadays works of painting and sculpture of the XVIII century, among which masterpieces of our well-known (I. P. Argunov, F. I. Shubin) and unknown serf artists and sculptors, portraits of our and European monarchs, Russian dignitaries of Peter I’s times are displayed in the palace. Rare still lives of the XVIII century and wonderful collections of English and German mythological engravings are exhibited in the sitting room and bedroom. In 1918 the mansion was nationalized and turned into a museum. In 1932 the State Museum of Ceramics and Glass was placed into the manor. One the finest and richest collections of the Russian and West European ceramics, glass, crockery and beautiful specimens of Russian porcelain, beginning with the XVIII century and up to post-revolutionary pieces, is displayed in the museum. Today the Kuskovo manor is a splendid monument of Russian culture of the 2nd part of the XVIII century.
