Izmailovo Country Estate
Izmailovo was once a royal estate outside Moscow reserved for hunting, and game was specially reared for the purpose. It was then called the Izmailov Menagerie. Peter the Great spent his childhood here, and he used to circle the lake in a small sailing boat. It was at Izmailovo that Peter formed the Preobrazhensky and Semyonovsky regiments of boy-soldiers, before they became part of the regular Russian army. Izmailovsky Park is one of the largest urban forest parks in the world, covering an area of 1180 hectares. It is larger than the Bois de Boulogne in Paris (848 hectares), and five times larger than Central Park in New York. The austere Bridge Tower (1671) was once attached to a white stone bridge leading to Izmailovsky Island. There are two notable gateways to the royal estate built by the architect Terenty Makarov in 1682. They served as a model for the gates at the
Novodevichy Convent and the Donskoy and Petrovsky Monasteries. The five-domed Christmas Church (1678) stands on the site of Izmailovo village, one kilometre from the royal estate.
