Fishing in Mongolia is one of the last adventures for fisherman who already were fishing all over our planet. Here lives the world's largest salmonid, the Taimen, also known to the Mongolians as „River Wolf". Taimen can reach up to 200 pounds and 2m long. Fishing here is catch and release with barbless hooks as it is one of the world's healthiest and biggest Taimen 
population.

TAIMEN (HUNCHO TAIMEN)

Taimen are a fascinating fish that have become well known for their voracious surface strikes, and for the impressive size that they can reach. Taimen of
over one metre, around 20 pounds, are considered a trophy, but the smaller Taimen are a lot of fun too, especially on a surface fly.
 

  • Taimen family: Salmonidae (Salmonids).
  • Range: North-Central Asia (Mongolia and Siberia).
  • Habitat: Rivers and lakes. Prefers large, flowing, shallow, cold rivers with deep pools.
  • Size and weight: Up to 200 pounds (90kg) and 7 feet (2.1m) long. Commonly over 20 pounds (9.5kg).
  • Food: Rodents, lemmings, mammals, birds, mice, smaller fish.
  • Fishing: Best results with simple mouse patterns and very large hooks. streamer flies, surface and swimming lures and plugs, spoons and spinners. Also ink-tips and sinking lines works well. Best seasons are May/June and September / October.
  • Others: The Taimen, the world’s largest salmonid, is a relativley unknown fish in the western hemisphere. It is a hard-fighting and a ferocious predator that will eat everything they can fit in their mouth. Spawns in May.
LENOK (BRACHYMYSTAX LENOK

Lenoks, otherwise known as Asiatic trout or Manchurian trout,[3] are salmonid fish of the genus Brachymystax, native to rivers and lakes in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, wider Siberia (including Russian Far East), Northern China and Korea.
 

  • Family: Salmonidae (Salmonids).
  • Range: North-Central Asia (Mongolia and Siberia).
  • Habitat: Rivers and lakes. Prefers large, flowing, shallow, cold rivers.
  • Size and weight: Up to 40 inches long. Commonly between 16 to 25 inches
  • Food: Insects (aquatic and terestrial), caddis, mayflies, mice, small fish.
  • Fishing: Lighter fly rods, mice patterns, streamers, dry flies, hoppers, floating lures.
TROUT (SALMO TRUTTA)
  • Family: Salmonidae (Salmonids).
  • Range: Europe, Asia.
  • Habitat: Prefers cold, well oxygenated waters with submerged rocks, gravelly, banks and overhanging vegetation. Spawn in the rivers.
  • Size and weight: Up to 100 pounds (45kg) and 4.5 feet (1.4m) long. Commonly in Mongolia over 2 to 10 pounds.
  • Food: Insects (aquatic and terrestrial), mollusks, small fish.
  • Fishing: Dry flies, hoppers, caddis, attractor dries.
AMUR PIKE EXOX REICHERTII)
  • Family: Esocidae (Pikes).
  • Range: Northeast and Central Asia, Amur river system.
  • Habitat: Prefers cold and well-oxygenated rivers.
  • Size and weight: Up to 30 pounds (12kg) and 3 feet (0.9m) long.
  • Food: Insects (aquatic and terrestrial), mice, small fish.
  • Fishing: Not common fish in Mongolian lakes and rivers and therefore not well-known places for fishing reported.
     

Other fish are: Grayling, River perch, different kinds of carps and salmonids. Totally there are more then 75 different kinds of species reported in Mongolian rivers and lakes. 17 species are for game fish.
