HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Krasnoyarsk was founded in 1628 by Moscow nobleman Andrew Dubensky, who ordered to build a fortress on the junction of rivers Enisey and
Kacha. The fortress was named "krasny", which means "red" in
Russian. The city of Krasnoyarsk was growing under protection of the fortress.
When the Trans-Siberian railway was built, it gave the new
impulse to the city development. Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs boast picturesque
landscapes. The Enisey river, one of the largest on the territory of Eurasia,
and hills covered with forests make the guests of Krasnoyarsk fall in love with
Russian nature. Krasnoyarsk is the native city of outstanding Russian artist
Surikov. The admirers of his talent try to visit Krasnoyarsk at least once.
Among the sights of the city are the grandeur bridges, including railway
bridges, which deserve the tourists' attention.
This eastern Russian city is located on the Enisey River along the
Trans-Siberian Railway. It was founded in 1628 as the fort Krasny Yar 'beautiful
clearing' and grew in the 1960's when the world's largest hydroelectric dam was
built there on the Yenisey. Krasnoyarsk is an administrative center in the East
Siberian region of Russia with the population of more than 3 million people. The
city is one of the earliest settlements of Siberia. It was founded as a fort in
1628 by Cossack Andrey Dubenskiy. It was a wooden fortress with a wall with five
towers. For 100 years Krasnoyarsk played the role of frontier advanced post.
During its existence it was never conquered. When Siberia was finally joined to
Russia in 1690 the fortress officially received the status of a town. One of the
largest hydropower stations was built here in 1960.
