- Architectural - Ethnographic Museum
of Transbaikal Peoples
- Museum of Minerals (Geological Museum). The museum hosts the
richest collection of local rocks and minerals of Transbaikalia. The
exposition is of interest both to specialists and to the general public who
can get acquainted with the Earth treasury. Address: 59, Lenin ulitsa,
670000, Ulan-Ude. Operating hours: 9am to 1pm, 2pm to 4pm, on Tuesday and
Friday only.
- Natural History Museum. Operating hours: in summer - 10am to 6pm,
in winter - 10am to 5pm, closed on Monday . The museum is located 500 feet
from Soviet Square (the main square of the city)
Its collections are displayed in six exhibition rooms, each dedicated to a
different aspect of the natural history of the area. Among its exhibits you
can find a petrified tree, a mammoth skeleton, other paleontological items,
mineral samples, displays about flora and fauna of the region, historical
documents. One of the main attractions is the display about Lake Baikal. The
building of the museum also houses a puppet theater.
- Hangalov Museum of History of Buryatia. Operating hours: 10am to
6pm.One of the oldest museums in Siberia. Houses more than 100,000 exhibits
depicting lifestyles of indigenous peoples (Buryats, Evenks) and Russians in
the Trans-Baikal region, archaeological discoveries on the territory of
Buryatia, history of religion (Buddhism, Russian Orthodox Church,
Shamanism). Here you will find rare books, archive documents, chronicles as
well as exhibitions of contemporary art. The museum is proud to have in its
collection the two precious Buddhist manuscripts - Ganjur and Danjur and the
ancient Atlas of Tibetan Medicine.
- Sampilov Museum of Fine Art. Operating hours: 10am to 6pm, closed
on Monday. The museum contains private art collections, paintings and
sculptures by local artists, Buddhist tankas (icons) and folk handicraft
items made from wood, horse hair, bone and silver, contemporary art
exhibits.
- Museum of History of the City
- Museum of the Buryat Science Center of The Siberian branch of Russian
Academy of Sciences (BSC). The BSC museum was established as a
mineralogical museum to continue the activity of the public “Buryat Stone”
museum and the only academic museum in Transbaikalia reflecting the priority
research areas of Buryatia. There is a rich collection of nephrites of
different shades and colors, wonderful collection of decorative marble,
landscape jasper, various chalcedonies. The hall of minerals also hosts
paintings of I. Khudyakova “Twelve Months at the Baikal”. The biological
exposition contains botanical collection of rare and extinct plants. There
one can find Tibetan medicine raw materials. The exposition also presents
things related to Buddhism, such as Tibetan medicine manuscripts and texts.
There is an interesting collection of things dating back to Paleolithic
period, Neolithic axes and adzes, karasuksky bronze sword, a unique
collection of Hunn bronze, jewelry, mirrors and kitchenware. The material
culture of Buryats of 17-19 centuries is presented by the ethnographic
collection. The exposition “Lake Baikal ecology” contains the main data on
ecological and social problems of the Baikal region development.
- Khotsa Namsaraev Literature Museum. The museum introduces
visitors to the history of Buryat written language and literature
development, life and art of the founder of Buryat literature Khotsa
Namsaraev and people’s poet N. Damdinov. Among the exhibits there is the
original of the epic “Geser”, collection of legends – uligers, rare
publications of canonical manuscripts on Tibetan and Buryat traditional
