Museum of History of Buryatia
named after M. Khangalov
It’s one of the oldest museums of Siberia. It was opened in 1923 and it got its
name in 1958. M. Khangalov was a famous Buryat ethnographer. Today museum is a
scientific – lore center of Transbaikalia. There are more than 100 000 articles
in the exhibitions of the museum. Unique collection of the Buddhist art, rare
books, written records of ancient Orient, Atlas of Tibetan Medicine - a monument
of classical Tibetan culture, is kept here. There are 3 such atlases in the
world. There are 2 instant exhibitions in the museum, they are “Chronograph of
Buryatia” and “Sacred picture of the world in Buddhist art: compassion, wisdom
and spiritual power – sacral art of Buryatia”. History of religions such as
Buddhism, Russian Orthodox Church, Shamanism on the territory of Buryatia. There
are 2 precious Buddhist manuscripts – Ganjur and Danjur. Archeological
discoveries on the territory of republic.
