SIGHTINGS OF THE BURYATIA

KABANSKY REGION

TOURIST ZONE

Kabansky region is rather independent tourist area of Buryatia. It is located along the southeast coast of Baikal from the Oblom cape in the north up to the Snezhnaya River in the south and also borders on Irkutsk oblast. From the west it is washed by waters of Baikal Lake, from the east it is limited with mountain ranges of Ulan-Burgasy and Khamar-Daban. The Selenga River divides the region almost into two equal parts. The basic territory represents a wide valley in the mouth of the Selenga with the area of 13, 5 thousand sq. km, 462 m above the sea level. The territory of the region is cut up by numerous channels of rivers flowing into Baikal: the Abramikha, the Kultushnaya, the Manturikha, the Mysovka, the Bolshaya, the Pereemnaya, the Tankhoi, the Snezhnaya, the Vydrinaya and other rivers. The region got its name from the name of the river Kaban'ya in the valley of which wild boars had been found before.

  • Posolsky Sor. Posolky Sor is the largest among shallow gulfs of Baikal separated from the main water area by sandy spits. The Posolskie sandy spits, the Northern and Southern ones have a common name – the peninsula of Karga. The width of the spit changes from 30 up to 200 meters. The gulf has even depths - almost everywhere about 3-4 m. The following rivers run into the gulf as the Bolshaya Rechka (the Big River) 70 kms long, which forms a channel near its mouth, the Tolbusikha, 16 km long, the Abramikha, 26 kms long and the Kultushnaya with the length 35 kms., all rivers flow down the slopes of the ridge of Khamar-Daban. In the north-east of the gulf there is a village of Posolskoe and Posolsky Spaso-Preobrazhensky monastery. On the southern side there is a place of Povorot (Turning) and further the village of Boyarsk. The recreational places are located in the middle of the gulf: the Baikalsky Priboy and Kultushnaya separated by the river of Abramikha. Near each place there are stops of electric trains. The places of Baykalsky Priboy and Kultushnaya are connected with the motorway of federal value Moscow - Chita ¹ 55, but there is no road between them as there is no bridge over the Abramikha-river. The place of Povorot is connected with a motorway ¹ 55 through the village of Boyarsk, but it has a bad quality.

Posolsky Sor is a specific natural complex with various landscapes where different vegetative and other living communities are represented. It is the only gulf in the Baikal closed from the basic water area, where active water exchange occurs basically during storm. Due to sufficient warming up of water in the gulf the growth of young omuls takes place there.

The gulf has been used for the arrangement of rest for a long time. Mainly a 14-kilometers coastline is used for it as the construction of tourist objects is conducted here, campings, shops and stations of renting boats are also located here. In the recreational place of Baikalsky Priboy function 44 objects of accommodation of tourists, in the place of Kultushnaya there are 23 objects. The majority of objects function only in summer. Because of high recreational loadings appreciable adverse changes have been watched in the environment. In 1999 the whole territory of Posolsky Sor was declared to be an especially protected nature territory of regional value followed by the restriction of loadings.

  • Baykalsky Priboy. 44 objects of accommodation of tourists function on the territory of Baykalsky Priboy, their location is indicated on the schemes (scheme1, scheme2). There are also shops, kiosks and a station of long-distance communication. Along the coastline of the lake there is a motorway which begins near the railway crossing and finishes with an impasse at the camp of "Baikal". From the city of Ulan-Ude in summer one can come here by an electric train, a fixed-route taxi, or own car.

  • Kultushnaya
23 objects of accommodation of tourists function on the territory of Kultushnaya, their location is indicated on the scheme. There are shops, kiosks and an open market. The tourist centre “Kultushnaya” of ESRR (East-Siberian Railway Road) has a health-improving centre with a pool, saunas, a bar, a dining-room, a paid car-parking which accept all holiday-makers. From the railway stop "Kultushnaya” begins a motorway which is 1km long and leads to this place. From the city of Ulan-Ude one can come here by a fixed-route taxi, a car or an electrotrain.

  • Povorot (Turning)
Povorot is the place representing a big glade with a strip of forest where an old fishing village Povorot had been before the Angarsky cascade of hydroelectric power stations began to work. A large fishing collective farm, a fish-reception station used to work here and salting of fish was conducted. The village was demolished because of threat of flooding of this district by waters of Baikal. Flooding didn’t happen. At present practically there are no any buildings left, only the remains of the concreted compartments and big barrels for salting fish and also the rests of a vessel typical for Baikal are found here. Povorot is used in summer for the organization of tourist campings.

  • Lemasovo
The place of Lemasovo is situated on the shore of the gulf Chekalov Sor. The gulf is shallow and boggy, its depth does not exceed 1 meter. The shore is sandy, overgrown with scrubs and birches. In summer the place is used for the organization of camping. The water area of the gulf is convenient for windsurfing. The place is connected with settlements of Kabansk and Posolsk by a motorway which leads to the motorway of federal value Moscow - Chita ¹ 55. Lemasovo is declared a special protected nature territory of regional value, the regime of restrictions of loadings has been introduced here.

  • Enkhaluk – Sukhaya
The place of Enkhaluk-Sukhaya is located on the right bank of the river of Selenga. The major part of the coastline of Baikal is used for recreation activities. In many places there are sandy beaches and the forest is located next to them. There are 3 settlements in which objects of accommodation of tourists and a network of guest houses develop. These are villages of Enhaluk, Sukhaya and the place of “Pionerlager”.

  • "Pionerlager”(Pioneer camp)
In the place of “Pionerlager” functions a summer rest-camp of the CMNE (City Management of National Education) of Ulan-Ude and the yurta tourist complex is being built. The chink of thermal water is located here and the bath for bathing has been constructed in the open air.
