The Republic of Buryatia is a subject of the Russian Federation with its own
legislative and executive powers. Head of the executive branch is President of
the Republic of Buryatia.
The administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Republic is the city of
Ulan-Ude (population - 377000 people).
GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES
The total area of the republic is 351.3 thousand sq. km.
Buryatia is situated in Eastern Siberia to the south-east of Lake Baikal. The
republic borders on Mongolia in the south, the Irkutsk region - in the
north-west, the Chita region - in the east.
The distance from Ulan-Ude to Moscow by railroad is 5519 km and to the Pacific
ocean - 3500 km. The distance to China (the city of Manzhouli) is about 1000 km.
On the whole, Buryatia holds beneficial geographical position in economic
relations between Russia and the Asian-Pacific countries - all transportation
lines run across the territory of Buryatia (including Transsiberian and Baikal-Amur
railroads).
The climate of Buryatia is extreme continental with cold winter and hot summers.
The average temperature in summer is +18°C, in winter -22°C. The weather is
usually dry – there is a lot of sunshine and comparatively little rainfall.
Buryatia is remarkable for its extremely picturesque landscapes – varying from
thick forests to vast steppes and mountains shooting up in the blue sky, rich
and to a great extent - unique - flora and fauna, and the pride and pearl of
Siberia – Lake Baikal - the largest freshwater lake in the world.
POPULATION
There are 112 nationalities living in Buryatia. The most numerous ethnic
groups, after the Russians and the Buryats, are Byelorussians, Armenians,
Ukranians, and Tatars.
The population growth was as follows: 1887 - 300 thousand people; 1926 -
388,9 thousand people; 1939 - 545, 8 thousand people; 1959 - 673, 3 thousand
people; 1970 - 812, 2 thousand people; 1979 - 899, 4 thousand people; 1989 -
1038 thousand people; 1996 - 1058 thousand people. Since 1994 there have been a
gradual decrease of the population under the influence of social, economic and
demographic factors. As of January 1, 2003 there were 987 thousand people living
in Buryatia. Average population density is 3,0 people per 1 sq. km. The urban
population is about 60 % of all the population of the Republic, with about third
of the population living in Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryata.
Native population of the Republic is the Buryats, the Evenks and the Soyots.
Since the beginning of the 1990-s some national groups have created national -
cultural associations and centres, began to revive national culture, promote it
among local population of the republic. Ethnic groups of the Jews, the Germans,
the Poles, the Koreans, the Armenians, the Azerbaijanians, the Tatars, the
Byelorussians are very active.
In Buryatiya harmonious relations between different ethnic groups have been
developed and supported for a long time. Mixed marriages are frequent.
Conditions for development and interaction of various cultures are favorable. It
creates positive background for the development of cooperation, mutual
understanding and friendship, which are traditional for the Republic.
ECONOMIC PROFILE
Natural and climatic conditions of Buryatia together with its border and
intransit location determine its modern economic profile as that of a
transportation-and-distribution and agricultural-industrial region. The key
profile of agriculture is dairy farming.
The republic has developed mining and forest industries, as well as
machine-building. Buryatia is remarkable for its deposits of precious, rare and
non-ferrous metals and some other kinds of mineral resources.
Due to the favorable natural environment Buryatia received status of a special
economic zone of tourist-recreational type; currently the tourist segment is
rapidly developing.
