Irkutsk is one of the great Siberian cities and by right considers itself the capital of Eastern Siberia Irkutsk is located at almost the very center of Asia (52'17" North 104'16' East) It is approximately on the same latitude as Orenburg, Saratov Voronezh, Warsaw and Berlin It is 5042 kilometers and 5 time zones from Moscow, and 8 time zones from Greenwich.

Irkutsk is a major transport hub in Eastern Siberia The Trans-Siberian Railroad, connecting Europe with the nations of Asia and Pacific Rim, runs through Irkutsk

A network of waterways and highways connect Irkutsk with the cities and villages around Baikal, in northern Irkutsk region, Krasnoyarskiy Krai and the Republic of Buryatiya and Mongolia.

THE SOUTH DIRECTION

Route: Irkutsk - Ulan-Ude - Ulaanbaatar - Beijing

Irkutsk and Ulaanbaatar are connected by the Trans-Mongolian railway, but there are not many trains that travel on it. The most popular and reliable train is the daily train #364. It departs Irkutsk in the evening and arrives to Ulaanbaatar early in the morning after 2 nights of travel. This train does not have 1st class cabins, but it is possible to book (min. 2 people required) the whole entire 2nd class cabin if you want space and privacy. There are 2 more trains available to Ulaanbaatar from Irkutsk: train #6 (on Sundays & Mondays) and train #4 (on Saturdays). Both are transiting Irkutsk on the way from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar and Beijing. Availability of seats depends upon the number of people that get off in Irkutsk, and are announced only 24-48 hours prior to departure. Both trains (#6 & #4) have 1st class cabins. They depart Irkutsk early in the morning and arrive to Ulaanbaatar next day early in morning.
