Irkutsk excursions

Irkutsk is one of the great Siberian cities and by right considers
itself the capital of Eastern Siberia Irkutsk is located at almost the very
center of Asia (52'17" North 104'16' East) It is approximately on the same
latitude as Orenburg, Saratov Voronezh, Warsaw and Berlin It is 5042 kilometers
and 5 time zones from Moscow, and 8 time zones from Greenwich.
Irkutsk is laid out on the banks of the Angara River about 66 kilometers from
Lake Baikal
and the Angara s confluence with Irkut River from which the city derives its
name The city occupies 30600 hectares The city is divided into four
administrative districts Sverdlovsky, Lenmsky, Pravoberezhny and Oktyabrsky.
In terms of population Irkutsk is one of the largest cities in Eastern Russia
According to the most recent figures from January 1, 2002, 591000 citizens live
in the city.
Irkutsk lies between the plains and the mountains. The basic water artery is
the Angara - the only river which flows from Lake Baikal From the West, the
Angara is joined by another large river system - Irkut River and its tributaries
Olkha, Kaya - and from the East, Ushakovska River and Kuda River, as well as a
number of smaller streams fn 1955, in connection with the construction of the
Irkutsk State Electrical Station Irktusk Reservoir was founded The reservoir is
60 kilometers long and joins with Lake Baikal.
The city's Russian classical architecture dates from the period of the 1880s
when the city boomed after gold was discovered in the area. Most of the brick
mansions and grand public buildings varying in architectural styles were
constructed in the late 19th – early 20th century. The beautiful Russian
Orthodox churches and a Polish Cathedral (the only Siberian Gothic–style
building) are located in downtown. You will see many small one– and two–stored
wooden houses or cabins that are decorated with «wooden laces» (hand–made
carvings) as well as modern constructions of the 20th century.

the Apparition of Our Lord, the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross and visit

This memorial was opened on the Nizhnyaya Naberezhnaya (Lower Embankment —
transl ) on May 8, 1975.

Alexander III. The history of monument Alexander III is interesting and dramatic. The figure of the emperor was first placed here in honor of the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It was unveiled in 1908.
At your request, a visit to the Museum of Decembrists can be arranged.
The museum is housed in a mansion belonging to one of the leaders of Decembrist
