SIGHTS OF INTEREST IN MONGOLIA
ZAISAN MEMORIAL

This is the most scenic route of all, but also the most difficult. It's a good six hours each way and the boulders near the summit make it hard going.
From the Zaisan Memorial, move past the huts and head up the valley, 100m or so, then cut into the forest to your left. It's a very steep slope until you get to the top of the first
ridge (about a 30-minute walk). On top of the ridge, you should find a large ovoo and an obvious path. From here, the slope levels off and becomes an easy walk through a pleasant forest for the next
two hours.
Eventually, the path disappears into an area of boulders, and you should come out to a point where you have a good view. You should be able to see the summit clearly at this point,
but the climb is not yet half over.
Take a compass reading on the summit, then descend into a valley before climbing the final ridge. There is no path, though there are many false paths made by pine nut gatherers.
You'll hit plenty of boulder fields on this last ridge, but you can avoid the worst of them by keeping a little to the
East of the summit. Finally, you come out into a broad meadow where the two rock
pinnacles of the summit should be visible.
