THE REGIONS OF MONGOLIA
SIGHTS OF INTEREST IN MONGOLIA
KHANDGAIT

About 40km North of Ulaanbaatar, Khandgait is another lovely area of cow
pastures, small mountains, pine forests and wildflowers surrounding the small
village of the same name. Like Terelj, there are plenty of opportunities for
hiking, rock climbing, fishing in the nearby Selbe Gol and, in winter,
ice-skating and cross-country skiing (it's possible to rent skies and sledge
here in winter).
Khandgait is a cheaper and less touristy alternative to Terelj but, because
of this, Khandgait suffers from a lack of transport and good facilities.
Khandgait is not part of a national park, so no permit is required.
The first half of the road between Ulaanbaatar and Khandgait is paved; the
second half is reasonably rough. The road goes past Khandgait and continues
north to smaller, lovelier and more secluded valleys.
On the road to Khandgait, you'll pass hundreds of wooden huts built in a
haphazard fashion around the valleys. These were used by residents of
Ulaanbaatar as summer houses - somewhere cool and quiet to escape the heat.
However, with the advent of capitalism, many Mongolians are now poorer and can
no longer afford the huts, so most of them lay abandoned. (They cannot be used
by travellers.)
